How to look fresh faced even when you’re exhausted

Most of us are not getting the full 8 hours of required beauty sleep each night. Lack of sleep increases the hormone cortisol, which increases stress. The increase in stress can cause a hormone imbalance, which wreaks havoc on our skin, causing dry or oily skin and possibly an increase of blemishes. Here are 7 tips we can all fit into our day.

Splash cold water on your skin

A quick splash of cold water on your face first thing in the morning helps to wake up the skin. It helps as it restricts blood vessels, so it will minimise redness and reduce puffy eyes.

Hydrate and nourish your skin

A hydrating moisturiser will lock in water and plump up the skin. A moisturising cream formulated with Marine Collagen will nourish the skin and smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Apply a moisturiser with SPF before sun exposure to avoid age spots. Spray a hydrating face mist throughout the day to prevent dehydrated skin and freshen make-up.

Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water daily, especially in summer or after exercising, when we tend to lose a lot more fluids. It’s best to drink filtered water or filtered alkaline water. Avoid plastic bottles as some types of plastic leach chemicals when exposed to heat or sunlight.

Get the right under eye concealer

The right under eye concealer is creamy and dewy and needs to suit your skin tone. A powdery finish will accentuate fine lines, therefore keep it dewy. Paint it on with a concealer brush and then either blend it by patting lightly with your fingertips or use a damp makeup sponge. It’s important to use a colour correcting concealer to cover dark under eye circles or redness. If you’ve got fair-medium skin go for a peach toned concealer under your regular one to neutralise blue tones, if you’re medium-dark, use an orange toned one. Purple corrects discolouration and also brightens dark circles. Use green concealer under your usual concealer to neutralise redness from blemishes or rosacea and use yellow to add radiance.

Avoid touching your face throughout the day

Leaning your face on your hands while you’re sitting at your desk can create temporary lines and wrinkles. Touching your face can also cause pimples and acne as we all have bacteria on our hands.

Cleanse before bed

Going to bed with make-up on may clog the pores and increase the likelihood of breakouts. Our skin regenerates best at night so it’s important to remove make-up to allow night creams to absorb and work on our skin while we sleep.

Regular exfoliation

Exfoliate twice per week to buff away the top layer of dead skin, which encourages cell turnover. It’s best to exfoliate at night, after cleansing, as this will help your night skincare creams and serums to be more effective. If you must exfoliate during the day, avoid going out in the sun for a few hours and avoid applying foundation immediately after polishing your skin.
